IONIC MINERALS ARE BEST TYPE FOR ASSIMILATION Print email this page
Minerals are important and so is the way you get them.
Which minerals are best for you? Keeping the level of minerals in balance in our bodies may be the most important key to maintaining human health. Ideally we get minerals from diet but modern agriculture and farming methods have depleted the soil of minerals, making it difficult to acheive optimal intake. Many people eat highly processed food lacking in minerals which contribute further to mineral imbalances.

All are not created equal when it comes to the absorption of minerals: age, intestinal health, fiber intake and other factors influence how many minerals you can absorb. If for any reason you are not producing enough hydrochloric acid as you digest food, calcium and other minerals like chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, selenium and zinc (and others) are less available to you. Aging is one cause for a decrease in digestive capacity.

Some other reasons for mineral deficiencies are disease which often increase the demand for minerals and drug nutrient interactions. Prescription drugs may cause depletion of certain minerals. (Iron absorption is affected by antacids and tetracycline. Magnesium and zinc are lost when oral diurectics, penicillamine and antacids containing aluminum hydroxide are used.)

Most minerals are best absorbed in their ionic form. When minerals are unbound from food by the acids in the stomach they move into ionic form free to be assimilated by the body. This is the way a healthy body is able to extract a mineral like calcium from a food like milk.

Ionic minerals are already in a form that the body recognizes and "understands" so they can be quickly put to good use. Minerals that are properly chelated with amino acids from hydrolyzed protein or other substances such as citrates, aspartates or picolinate are ionized and thus made available to the body. Such high quality chelated minerals areavailable as supplements. It also possible to "collect" minerals in their natural ionic form. Trace minerals taken in liquid form from the Great Salt Lake are ionized in solution. When taken in a liquid or dried form, these minerals are well assimilated.

Non-chelated minerals like sulfates, carbonates and gluconates are not in ionic form and are more difficult to assimilate. Tums are supposed to neutralize stomach acidity which is another reason why the calcium is difficult to assimilate as calcium requires hydrochloric acid to move into ionized form.

Currently popular are colloidal minerals which are a suspension of tiny non-soluble mineral and trace mineral particles in water. Most colloidal minerals are from prehistoric mineral deposits such as humic shale and are considered by some to be "organic", however, coal and many petroleum products are "organic" by the same standards. Colloidal minerals may be high in toxic minerals such as aluminum and phosphate and even lead. Aluminum and lead in any form and from any source can accumulate and be toxic to the body.

To assure you are getting all the minerals you need we recommend chelated minerals specifically designed for human consumption or minerals gathered from a geological site free of undesireable minerals. These natural sources can provide rich sources of minerals needed to maintain health.
