| Beta -1,3-GLUCAN BOOSTS NATURAL IMMUNITY |

Researchers investigating the workings of the immune system have found a revolutionary and exciting area of nutritional support. Stimulation of macrophage cells. Macrophage cells play an essential and pivotal role in the maintenance of the immune response. They are our body's first line of defense. They can recognize and kill tumor cells non-specifically and remove foreign debris. They can stimulate the immune system in general, and increase the bone marrow's production of immune cells. Factors such as aging, chronic infection, poor nutritional health, radiation, insecticides, food preservatives and pharmaceuticals as well as stress can all compromise the immune systerm and reduce macrophage activity. Immunosuppression can cause even more problems .
ß-1,3-glucan has been proven to both stimulate and activate macrophage cells which counter these negative effects. It is the most widely and most commonly observed macrophage activator in nature and one of the most potent stimulators of the immune response. Research has revealed that macrophage cells have a specific receptor for yeast ß-1,3-glucan. When activated, these receptors can stimulate macrophage activity creating "an arsenal of defense". Free radical scavenger. ß-1,3,-glucan can protect macrophages from free radical attack due to radiation exposure and from other sources. Free radical scavenging assays were repeated in different models and all confirmed the anti-oxidant effect of ß-1,3,-glucan.
Effective when taken orally. The most active form of ßeta Glucan is isolated from the cell wall of baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cervisiae) and is called ß-1, 3-glucan and is orally effective, completely safe and non-toxic. Recent experiments at Baylor College of Medicine prove the oral effectiveness of this substance which is comparable to that achieved by injection as a stimulant of non-specific immunity. ß-1,3-glucan is Generally Recognized As Safe (category GRAS, according to the FDA) and has no known toxicity or side effects.
Clinical applications. Dr. Carrow has used ß-1,3-glucan with a variety of patients including:
As a result of his clinical work, Dr. Carrow concludes that ß-1,3,-glucan is a very safe and potent nutritional supplement with a profound systemic effect that can be described as nonspecific immune stimulation combined with its free-radical scavenging activity. "It is ... my opinion that this substance can be safely consumed by many chronically ill patients with the anticipation of signifcant results" Excerpted from Donald J. Carrow, M.D, "ß-1,3-glucan as Primary Immune Activator, The Townsend Letter for Doctors & Patients - June, 1996 |
