MSM in the natural state is an inconspicuous sulfur molecule found in the atmosphere, in plants, animals, and the human body where it plays an important role in healthy skin, cartilage, and connective tissue and is vital to healing wounds. Sulfur in its oxidized form is used by the liver to detoxify substances and to prepare them for excretion by the kidneys. Sulfur bearing amino acids like methionine are crucial to many biochemical functions including altering the structure and function of hormones and other amino acids. Cysteine, derived from sulfur bearing methionine , is key to the formation of glutathione which is an important anti-oxidant and detoxifying agent.

Medical literature contains references to the use of sulfur-rich baths for healing purposes, particularly for arthritis. No matter where you travel chances are you'll find a sulfur hot spring with a healing tradition attached to it. One of the most famous and oldest of all sulfur medicinals is garlic. Researchers have found at least 100 sulfur compounds in garlic and have validated many of its folk medicine applications.

A safe source of supplemental sulfur can be taken in the form of laboratory synthesized MSM. MSM is the main metabolite of DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) which has been used for many years in the treatment of pain and inflammation. DMSO has a distinctive fish -like odor and taste which makes long term use undesirable. MSM is free of any odor yet retains many of the numerous beneficial properties of DMSO. No ill effects were detected using high doses of MSM in long term toxicity trials with laboratory animals. MSM is in fact one of the least toxic naturally occurring substances.
Many types of pain and inflammatory conditions responded positively to MSM supplementation including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic back pain, headaches, muscle pain, fibromyalgia, bursitis, heartburn and more.
