We asked six manufacturer's to comment on the safety of their bovine derived products.
DR'S BEST Doctor's Best products are BSE-Free The recent publicity on bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) has some consumers questioning whether dietary supplements containing cattle-derived ingredients may place them at risk of contracting BSE, commonly known as "Mad Cow Disease." While this is an important concern that needs to be addressed, Doctor's Best sees no cause for alarm.

On August 17, 2000 the National Nutritional Foods Asociation issued the following statement: No evidence has been found that any dietary supplements from bovine parts distributed in the U.S. are contaminated with BSE.

BSE is an abnormal protein, a prion. The BSE prion is found only in certain tissues from cows with the disease, mainly the brain and spinal cord. The prion is also found in bone marrow and some glands, but infectivity in these tissues is relatively low. Doctor's Best products do not contain any ingredients derived from cattle tissues that can be infected with BSE.

Chondroitin Sulfate Chondroitin sulfate is extracted from bovine tracheal (windpipe) cartilage which is not one of the tissues where the BSE prion is found. Doctor's Best products are certified to contain no bovine material originating from BSE countries. Doctor's Best chondroitin sulfate is manufactured in China which is listed by the FDA as one of the countries which does not have BSE and does not import cattle products from BSE countries.

Colostrum Doctor's Best Premium 3 First Six Hour Colostrum is a 100% domestic product collected from healthy cows in the mid-western U.S. Colostrum is secreted from the mammary glands in the first few days after the cow gives birth. Mammary glands are not among the tissues that can be infected with the BSE prion so even if a cow did have BSE she could not pass it in her colostrum. (Phone: 800-777-2004)

JARROW FORMULAS Bone-Up Not Affected Jarrow Formulas Bone Up contains bone powder (or Microcrystalline Hydroxyapatite - MCHA calcium) derived from Australian cows and has never been affected by any circumstances surrounding BSE or Mad Cow disease.

Jarrow Formulas, Inc. has announced that, according to the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service, Australia has been and continues to be free from Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs) affecting animals including bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and scrapie. Furthermore, Australia is clinically free of all BSE and Foot and Mouth disease. The outbreak of BSE that recently occurred in England and other parts of Europe cannot happen in Australia, for the following reasons:

Australian law forbids any agricultural practices that transmit BSE. Australia's trading partners have declared Australia a BSE free zone, which was reinforced by the European Commission which gave Australia "the most favorable 'Level 1' rating" in August, 2000.

Australia, along with New Zealand, is considered the safest in the world among cattle containing countries.

Australia was the first to ban the importation of live cattle as well as any beef products.

The origins of BSE in England. The practice of feeding meat byproducts to cows including diseased sheep parts tainted with the disease scrapie was common in the United Kingdom (England & Northern Ireland). Cows were then slaughtered and fed to other cows - practices which led to the well publicized BSE outbreaks.

Australian Cows fed on wild grasses. Australian cows, in contrast to those in the United Kingdom, are fed in the open Australian range where they graze across an area so vast that they are herded by helicopter! This practice prevents the occurrence of BSE in Australia. Bone Up is a clean, safe product and is the most effective bone buliding product on the market and contains the only form of calcium that has ever been documented to increase bone mass" says Sid Shastri, Vice President of Product Development at Jarrow Formulas, Inc. Symbiotics is dedicated to life first, and committed to quality, service and innovation.

Symbiotics addresses Mad Cow/ BSE Frenzy There has been a great deal of public interest in the spread of BSE in Britain and Europe. To date, there are no known cases of BSE in the United States. Symbiotics, Inc. distributes supplements in many forms that contain bovine colostrum from New Zealand. We would like to address this issue and reassure our customers that our products are guaranteed 100% safe and completely free of disease.

What is BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy)? BSE, which occurs in adult cattle, is one of a group of brain-wasting diseases known as Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (TSEs). It was first identified in Britain in 1986. The disease has an incubation period of 3-5 years. This debilitating neurological illness causes brain cells to deteriorate in cattle, resulting in erratic behavior including charging; hence the term 'mad cow' disease.

How is BSE transmitted? The disease spreads when cattle feed on meat and bone meal of infected sources. Studies in Britain confirm that BSE cannot be transmitted from a cow to her calf through her colostrum or milk. What is New Zealand's TSE status?

New Zealand's livestock populations are free from all TSEs- Scrapie in sheep and goats, BSE in cattle, and CWD in deer. New Zealand is internationally recognized explicitly and implicitly as free from BSE by many regulators and scientists.

Why is New Zealand free of these diseases? New Zealand's farmers use grass-fed, pasture-based management systems. Importing meat and bone meal for feeding livestock has been illegal in New Zealand for almost 50 years. New Zealand is ensured of an extremely low likelihood of BSE entering the cattle population due to its grass-fed, pasture-based farming system and the absence of Scrapie and BSE.

Is there any verification of New Zealand's status? In July 2000, the EU Scientific Steering Committee (EU SSC) published the results of a "Geographical BSE-Risk Assessment" of 24 countries. New Zealand was classified in Category 1, the lowest risk category (highest achievable category). The assessment rated the "likelihood" that live cattle could be clinically or pre-clinically infected with the BSE agent. Under the EU SSC assessment the US and Canada are Category 2, i.e. "unlikely, but not excluded."

What about the New Zealand Dairy Group? The New Zealand Dairy Group is comprised of hundreds of farms around New Zealand which surpass internationally recognized quality standards. They currently hold ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 ratings. (An ISO 9001 rating verifies that the manufacturing processes and equipment meet stringent consumer safety requirements. The ISO 14001 rating ensures that no part of the manufacturing process harms the environment.) Colostrum production in New Zealand is overseen by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, a governmental body that regulates colostrum's collection, engineering, maintenance, manufacturing, product testing, quality control, and pathogen management.

Are all New Life Colostrum Products from New Zealand? Symbiotics sources its entire line of colostrum products in New Zealand with the exception of New Life Colostrum HI-IG. This product is formulated in a way to provide the highest IG content available. New Zealand's governmental regulations prohibit any changing of the product, so our manufacturer sources this product within the U.S. This supplier of raw colostrum conforms to strict standards and guarantees not to use growth hormones, pesticides or antibiotics. These cattle do not use unregulated feeding materials, and the dairies hold current USDA Grade A licenses. Symbiotics guarantees that New Life Colostrum products are BSE-free. AMERICAN BIOLOGICS American Biologics does not offer for sale any products containing bovine derived ingredients originating from any country in which BSE is known to exist. Most of our products containing bovine derived ingredients originate from within the U.S. A few of the glandular ingredients are from free range, grass fed cattle from Australia. According to the USDA, BSE is not known to exist in the USA or Australia. (Phone: 800-227-4473.

NATURE'S LIFE Nature's Life has documents to certify that all the bovine sourced ingredients used in our products have been sourced from countries where BSE has not yet been reported and therefore presumed to be free of BSE. Nature's Life will continue to monitor the rapidly evolving BSE situation and ensure the safety of our products. We will not knowinglly accept contaminated ingredients; we shall continue to demand certification documents, and we shall ensure product safety for our consumers. (Phone: 800-864-7744)

ECOLOGICAL FORMULAS The country of origin for all these bovine/ovine derived glandular products is New Zealand: Sphingolin, T Cell Formula, B Cell Formula, Meganephrine, Ferritin. All other bovine/ovine derived products are being sourced domestically. (Phone 925-827-2636)
