Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is found in every tissue of the body but in particular it is an essential lubricant of healthy joints, skin, and eyes. HA is known to influence wound healing, inflammation, scar formation and many other critical processes. As we age, HA levels in our body decrease causing skin wrinkles, joint pain and other connective tissue complications. Hyaluronic acid and skin. HA assists in regulation of cell turnover in the skin. HA acts as an anti-oxidant protecting the skin from the oxidative stress caused by UV radiation (see article on sunscreens and the importance of anti-oxidants in UV protection). HA also functions as an aide to the commu- nication between cells - the cell-mediated immune response. Hyaluronic acid, likewise, helps to retain moisture in the skin to reduce wrinkles and maintain elasticity. Retention of adequate moisture supports skin nutrition and helps this tissue to dispose of waste products. This is similar to the role HA plays via the synovial fluid of the joints. (see below). In the skin, the extracellular matrix is composed of hyaluronic acid and other glycosaminogly- cans combined with collagen and elastin. Replenishment of HA to the skin must take place on a virtually daily basis. Hyaluronic acid and joints. HA works with water in the body to "bathe" cells and it concentrates in the areas of the body that must endure repeated movement and friction, such as joints. Cartilage consists primarily of water (as do most of the tissues of the body). HA is one of the most essential components of the synovial fluid that protects the joints from deterioration. HA supplements as part of a nutritional regimen. HA supplements should be given two to three months of proper and consistent use to provide maximum results. Because they are nutritional solutions, their benefits, once achieved, tend to show considerable "staying power." Joint care supplements, such as its Hyaluronic Acid Complex, from Jarrow Formulas, are best used in conjunction with anti-inflammatory nutrients like the omega-3 fatty acids. Other products support both skin and bone health, such as biologically active silicon (orthosilicic acid provided by BioSil(TM)from Jarrow Formulas). |
