Flower Essence Therapy
"Love and non-judgement are left out of most healing modalities today...", says Wendy Bodin, Certified Herbalist & Flower Essence Therapist. Flower essences resonate with us (just like love does) and who couldn't use a little love to heal? I attended a presentation by Wendy Bodin July 12 at The Vitamin Trader Education Center and learned more about the therapeutic uses of flower essences.

Not to be confused with essential oils (distilled oils from leaf, bark and other plant parts, which are mainly for external use), flower essences are diluted, potentized essence of flowers in pure water. They work like homeopathy, that is energetically, and pets and children are especially receptive to flower essence therapy. Flower essences had been used for centuries by native peoples across the globe when Dr. Edward Bach (1886-1936), an English physician (pathologist, bacteriologist, surgeon and homeopath) was led to study this delicate healing modality. Dr. Bach was frustrated with the allopathic model of medicine that addressed a patient's symptoms but not the emotions that accompany any illness. Bach studied and eventually systematized the modern use of flower essences that focus on the emotional aspect of illness.

Flower essence therapy is well suited for use with other healing modalities such as nutrition, supplements, and with a traditional medical approach. Healing for a range of issues is facilitated using flower essences-for example: Rescue Remedy assists when there is acute trauma or stress, and Yarrow offsets the harmful effects of electromagnetic radiation.

Flower essences were used effectively by Humane Society volunteers on pets rescued after Hurricane Katrina. They can quiet feral cats and phobic animals, and are used by many holistic veterinarians. Impatiens can quiet a very nervous dog, and Clematis when sprayed on a horse's lips can improve attention span during training. Flower essences may be safely used internally for a variety of conditions or they may be applied to the skin, added to bath water, and added to your pet's drinking water.
