Ganoderma lucidum Ganoderma lucidum, (Reishi in Japanese, Ling Zhi in Chinese), is reputed to be the “ultimate herbal substance”. The ancient texts and scripts described Reishi as a tonic reserved for emperors. Reishi is the oldest known medicinal mushroom in use for more than 4,000 years by Chinese medical practitioners. Reishi is a tonic herb benefiting "Qi" (vital energy) and bestowing multiple health benefits. Tonic herbs are used to preserve physical and mental well-being and to promote long life.
Research has shown that use of reishi improves hypertension, nervous tension and neurosis, bronchitis, and hepatitis. Additional research is being done on compounds in reishi that stimulate the immune system. A complex group of polysaccharides have been isolated from this mushroom...one theory is that these polysaccharides stimulate helper T cell production which attack infected cells, writes Paul Stamets, noted mushroom researcher. Certain polysaccharides in reishi have shown strong anti tumor activity as well. And cancer patients that ingest five to ten dry grams of the fruiting body a day, may have reduced side effects from chemotherapy and radiation treatment, as well as increased likelihood of survival. Reishis aid in increasing blood circulation as well, and may have some cholesterol lowering properties. |
