Withania somnifera
As the cold weather makes its way back with the fall season, Ashwagandha is the perfect herb to help give our body the extra-nourishment and protection required. In the 5,000 year-old tradition of Ayurvedic Medicine, Ashwagandha is one of the main rejuvenating herbs for Vata, the Wind Element in our body, which in excess creates:

1. Dryness (which manifests as arthritis and joint pain)

2. Cold and nervous system conditions (which manifest as insomnia or exhaustion).

The sanskrit name Ashwagandha includes a reference to horse suggesting thereby its ability to give us the stamina, muscle strength and power for which horses are known. Indeed, Ashwagandha, by virtue of its similarity to its Chinese cousin Ginseng, has been often referred to as ‘Indian Ginseng’. Although different in their mechanism of action, both herbs share a similar ‘adaptogenic’ quality, meaning that they will increase the body’s ability to respond and adapt to challenging conditions such as weather changes by boosting both immune response and energy levels. The latin name Withania somnifera suggests Ashwagandha’s sleep and rest-inducing properties. Indeed it is a wonderful tonic for the nervous system able to make sleep deeper and more restful at night while helping handle stress during the day, without dulling the mind like common somnifers (like Valerian for instance).

The other main area of action for Ashwagandha is the muscular system. It is particularly indicated in cases of muscle wasting, exhaustion, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, convalescence from surgery or lack of growth in children. The anti-fatigue properties of Ashwagandha have recently been confirmed by many studies which showed its ability to increase metabolic activity in cases of hypothyroidism, and it is quickly becoming a leading ingredient in most thyroid-support formulas. Ashwagandha is particularly recommended as a rejuvenating herb for men above 50 years of age and as such will help with common symptoms of aging such as low-back pain, weakness of the lower limbs and general loss of strength.

It can be taken either in tablet or tincture form, 2 to 6 tablets a day ( 1 to 3 droppers), preferably after meals and ideally with a glass of warm milk or some herbal tea. Enjoy!
