Avoiding Toxic Ingredients in Lotions & Potions

Are you informed about the ingredients listed (or not listed!) on your lotions and potions? Heard of parabens (methyl, propyl, butyl, and ethyl?), propylene glycol, quaternium 15, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, and artificial fragrances, just to name a few? Here's what they are and how to avoid them.

One of the most interesting aspects of skin care research shows that up to 60 percent of your favorite skin care product may be absorbed through the skin... the largest organ of the body. This means that chemical preservatives, fragrances, fragrance maskers, coloring agents, and stabilizers in most body care products are being introduced into our bloodstreams every time a cream or lotion is applied. This is very alarming because these toxic ingredients are stored and accumulate in the human fatty tissues and can become ticking time bombs.

MyChelle Dermaceuticals is one of the very few skin care lines on the market today, even in the "natural" industry, that is non-toxic and parabenfree. This is important because parabens, which are estrogen mimickers and chemical preservatives found in almost all body care products, accumulate in the tissues of the body, potentially causing harm. Recent evidence indicates that topical parabens have been detected in human breast tumors. (Another reason why we are dedicated supporters of the Susan G. Komen Foundation). Additionally, some people have a paraben mix allergy, resulting in a flare-up of a rash, or the spread of an existing treated rash. Paraben allergic hypersensitivity is not uncommon.

Other preservatives, such as DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea and quaternium-15, have a tendency to release trace amounts of formaldehyde into the skin, creating a toxic effect at the cellular level. Formaldehyde can cause joint discomfort and many other health problems. Imidazolidinyl urea and diazolidinyl urea, the most commonly used preservatives after the parabens, are a primary cause of contact dermatitis. Also to be avoided is triethanolamine (TEA), often used as a base for cleansers and in cosmetics to adjust the pH. TEA can be toxic if absorbed into the body for an extended period and may cause allergic reactions, dryness of skin and hair, and eye irritations. Artificial fragrances, often manufactured from petrochemicals, can irritate the skin while stripping away its natural protection. They can also be allergenic and cause health problems as mild as a headache to serious asthmatic complications. Synthetic colors are equally as bad due to the fact that they can be carcinogenic. (Avoid FD&C or D&C, followed by a number). Look for products containing natural coloring agents instead. Vegetable oils, except for those that are cold pressed, have a tendency to turn rancid relatively quickly. Free radicals are then created, setting up a carcinogenic environment in the skin.

Lotion and Potion Poisons Beware of personal care products containing phthalates, as these chemicals soak into the skin and accumulate over time. Phthalates are commonly found in hair sprays, perfumes and nail polish. Phthalates can be so persistent in living tissues that offspring exposed to their deleterious influences have an increased risk of reproductive abnormalities. The adverse effects of phthalates on the male reproductive system are also currently being studied.
